Marketing With E-mails

E-mail marketing is one of the best forms of direct marketing, which is done via the Internet. E-mails are sent to potential customers, to boost the business and to gain the trust of the readers by disclosing relevant information and help them to make good shopping decisions. It also enhances the relationship with a current customer, by repeating business with them. Put simply, the procedure of sending e-mails to customers is known as e-mail marketing.
The major advantage of e-mail marketing is that it doesn’t consume a lot of time, or resources and is very cost efficient. Within a very short period, a large audience can be reached.
Advanced features such as subscriptions, bounced messages, web bugs and click through rates all help the businesses owner to track potential customers. Since the customers can be directly reached, feedback can be collected with ease. In terms of cost, it is not as expensive, or as time consuming as e-zines or newsletters. Research has proven that this is the next best marketing technique, after search marketing. Seeing as we can’t all own search engines like Google, e-mail marketing is our best tool. It is also effective in tracking the return on investment.
E-mail marketing is a modernized version of mail marketing. The advantage over direct mail marketing, is that it takes a fraction of the time to reach a customer. The sales transaction is also an instant process. Just like people check their mailboxes every day, so too, is the email inbox checked by the majority of the Internet users, usually many times a day.
Over a period of time, many helpful tools and web services have been developed. A list host is a web service that provides several options to the marketers, like managing huge e-mail lists and e-mail address databases. If the budget is high enough, list managers can be hired. Their sole responsibilities are taking charge of opt-in-e-mail newsletters and managing list databases. This is only applicable to those who have massive lists. They track the effectiveness of campaigns, sales trigger rates and other important factors. They then chart all this information and are able to make recommendations to the marketer. Software is also available in the market that does this job too.
When the customer fills in the sign up form for the first time, there are often check boxes to be ticked, which reflect their interests. Depending on these choices, an advertiser sends relevant information to them. This is known as opt-in-e-mail advertising, because the customer has opted to receive e-mails and marketing like this isn’t illegal. For best results, it is best to refine and define the big list into several smaller lists, based in certain niches.
The content of the e-mail can be elaborate, but it shouldn’t be too long winded, as people are too busy to read screeds of text. The call to action, also known as trigger words, in the e-mail, should be chosen with care. It’s not necessary for the content to revolve around only one item and other related products can also be included. This is known as cross selling. Be careful not to confuse the buyer and also be wary of the spam rules.
By using a good auto responder, e-mail blasting, or sending an e-mail to multiple customers at a time, is very easy and can save a lot of time and will also increase the efficiency of the sign up, list registration and thank you processes.
The darker side of e-mail marketing is known as spamming. This is sometimes confused with bulking. Spamming is generally referred to as the sending of e-mail promotions without permission, or sending out irrelevant materials, for which the respondent has not agreed.
Bulking is different. Some companies collect e-mail addresses of people illegally and send irrelevant mails to them, which can be very annoying. It is illegal, both to harvest e-mail addresses and to buy and sell them.
E-mails are used for phishing purposes. This is when some crook disguises a malicious e-mail, to look like a legitimate one, with the intention of duping the receiver into disclosing personal details. This often includes banking details. They then fraudulently cleanout the bank accounts.
Some hackers even design an e-mail to seem like an advertisement, but when opened, it downloads adware, spyware and viruses, that can damage a computer. To make matters worse, the Direct Marketing Association of America has petitioned to make spamming legal. Some prohibitions are also placed on service providers, who help out business organizations to manage their e-mail marketing, by giving them already prepared e-mail templates.
Most of the mailing websites have now added the facility of separating spam from genuine e-mails, by creating separate folders for both and this is known as spam filtering. The downside is that with the use of a spam filter, a useful mail can mistakenly end up in that folder and then gets deleted with the rest of the spam mails.
There are many laws against spamming like the U.S “Can-Spam act,” and Europe’s privacy and electronic communications regulations. According to these laws, the businesses have to get their return addresses authenticated, false physical addresses should not be included and a one click unsubscribe link should be place in the e-mail. This is known as opting in. There are two versions, single, or double opt in. The penalty for businesses caught spamming is to be blacklisted and can be heavily fined.
There is an art to writing emails, that capture the interest of the subscribers and force them to buy. If you are not getting high sales conversions, it is probably because of the way you have written the email.
